I have been following Shirley's Three Part tutorial for making/binding a journal - she has a wonderful website that you might like to take a look at. Super instructions! Thank you, Shirley.
I made a small book using a variety of papers - scrap and watercolor leftovers, with a leather cover. The ornament is made with cardboard and metal pieces glued to a drink coaster, covered with aluminum tape, and painted with Lumieres.

Jungle Cat Journal

I just finished up making this journal which has a variety of papers for writing or drawing, along with some vintage papers from my collection. The cover is heavy fabric with a jungle print, lined with vinyl and hand-bound.
I am really enjoying making these books - whether paper or fabric based.

Play day Tuesday

I had a bit of a play day yesterday...here are the results of my experiments:

This first set is made by melting wax crayons onto Anaglypta wallpaper using an iron.

Next, stamp an image on white tissue paper with Versamark ink and cut around the image. Sprinkle embossing powder on it, and place the piece of tissue onto the waxed paper, and heat with heat gun. The image will pop, and the tissue will sink into the wax becoming almost invisible. I loved seeing the transformation.

The next set is made with glossy card – my project uses card from LocalKing.

Ink up the card with about three colors of Distress Inks with a sponge. Dry with heat gun. Place a stencil over the card, mist with water. Remove stencil and blot with paper towel to remove water. You get a ghosty image, which I quite liked. I have not used Distress inks with glossy cardstock before. Quick and easy background for a card.

Notebook

This notebook showcases pieces of the Anaglypta wallpapers. I sprayed washes over them, paints, inks, and embossing powders. The letters are from a game. (I love those)

I then bound the covers and text pages with the stab bound stitch....so easy. If you click on the photo, you can see the glitter from the glass beads.

I have been working on my altered books as well as art journal pages. There is so much wonderful inspiration on the web. However, I learned this: At one point you have to stop reading the books and watching the videos, and start inplementing what you have learned and discovered.
Here is a sampling of my playtime.

The photo below shows a quartet of coconut goodies on the right, a gift from Iran. They were yummy delicious.

This pic shows a page from my art journal, my first time playing with Soft pastels. I stamped the flowers and just coloured in with the chalks, and did my version of a scenic background! I used a waterbrush with the pastels, then some letter stickers.

This one has fabric covers, and paper signatures clothed in fabric. The papers are scrapbook papers, plain and patterened, and also some Stonehenge papers for writing and also for photos...whatever the heart desires!

Leather Inspire Journal

A little while ago I was playing with some paint techniques on various types of papers. I decided to make the papers into a book, and covered it with leather, with a couple of teeth (fake) in the binding!

Here is another view, showing the medallion made by stamping into air-dry clay with a text stamp, and painting with Lumieres.

The techniques are mainly paint spread with a credit card, painted again, then stamped on with foam stamps and water, then scraped again.

Right side has gold stamped on the painted page, with a piece of weblike paper, the left page has glare!

Encaustic cover Journal

Here is a journal cover I made from two pieces of packing material - corrugated cardboard! I ripped the top layer off in a few places, then added paints, stencils, and molding paste. I then covered the whole piece with encaustic medium. I do like the look of it, kind of etherial, don't you think?

The inside covers are painted with acrylics and stenciled with bubble wrap...a fave of mine.

This one has molding paste through sequin waste...another favorite!

Leather Covered junk-mail booklet

I started this book a while ago - using junk mail for the pages. The stock is very stiff and makes wonderful sturdy pages...some of them are double, some are triple folded, and some have flaps on all four sides...amazing advertising formats...great for an altering person!
There are four signatures and over 60 pages of collaging, painting, stenciling; you name it, it's in there!

Fabric Book

These are a few of the pages from my newest fabric book. I have been working on this book for months, just enjoying the journey!

I put the pages together with an old ruler, the spine is leather.

The pages feature transfers, and ephemera that I have made just experimenting with various techniques.

These two medallions are made with air-dry Model Magic.

This is a tissue flower, and a photo slide from days gone by!

Another day of complete playtime in my altered book - more stencils, stamps, paints, more paints, sprays.
I also rediscovered my Colorbox Stylus tool, with the foam shapes. I used them to make stamps from buttons, and came up with some really nice stamps. Take a look at the left side of the spread - those strange red markings are from a button impression! Another button impression is also visible on the right page.

Here are a couple of pages from one of my journals. This one was inspired after watching JournalArtista a couple of weeks ago on Ustream. Take a look at her streams, she has amazing skills. This week she played with stencils, a favorite of mine! and lots and lots of paint layers complete with the use of baby wipes.

The right page features a transfer using sticky-back vinyl.

I was playing yesterday with my tissues and serviettes, and this page emerged! Aren't serviettes grand to play with? just glue and tissue...how freeing is that?!? I used about six different serviettes (parts of them).
The image (wine label) on the left page is a transfer using clear mactac.

Raw edge fabric journal pages

Here are a couple of pages for my raw-edge fabric journal. This is a work in progress, and am still adding to some of the pages, twelve in total.

This has a painted muslin background, with dyed laces, organza, stencils, and two little squares of jumbles, heart of grungeboard, etc. I am making these little embellies, inspired by the book Fabric Art Collage, by Rebekah Meier. I really like this book...lots of techniques.

This patchy page features a Time to Stamp image of a little girl, on fabric, medallions made with air dry clay, more organza and used dryer sheets.

Placemat Bag

This is from an article in the Threads Aug/Sept 2005 issue. I have been meaning to make this bag for such a long time, and yesterday, a lovely snowy day, I picked up this mag and went to town.
It is made with a purchased placemat; this one has velvet leaves on the back. The button closure is a very old one from my stash - my MIL's gifts to me!
The bag has two pockets, a third side pocket, and a place for my pen in the top flap, sideways.

Spool Baby

This little doll was on a Christmas list compiled by Sharon of My Story Art. This is my version of the Spool Baby.
I did not have such tiny spools, so I used 4 wine bottle corks. The hair is yarn, and the face painted on an old oval bead. Ain't she sweet?

I found instructions for these on the internet and made a few up for Christmas gifts. They were super easy!
I made them out of a faux leather...the one on the left is a sable colour, the other is blue, with a creased design. I hung danglies from the zipper pull.

Serendipity booklet

Well, I have finally made a booklet from a rather large piece of 'junk' mail. I folded it a few times and got 3 pages plus the covers, at 6 x 6 inches. Yayy!
I covered all the pages with scrapbook paper stack of the same size. I then used images from the book 'Bathing Beauties', adding lace, ribbons, rub-ons, etc.
The front cover has a piece of grunge paper, smooched with alcohol inks. The metal flourish is door hardware. The flower is made from stamped fabric, paper painted with distress crackle paint, and an antique button.
Serendipity is stamped on gauze ribbon.

French Lunch

I have a serviette on the left page with paint scraped backgrounds. The right page has a mushroom paper bag, with some funny characters riding the wave!
This is mostly collage, with a stamped image of the River Seine in the centre.

Fall Geometry

An art friend of mine gave me some wonderful serviettes, and I have been playing with them in backgrounds.

Here is one that is a kind of Fall Geometry, a subject that I really liked in high school. The right page is more of the paint scraped technique, using three colors of Fall. Then some stamping with those rubbery tools for opening jars. Look around for objects to use for stamping - great fun!

The tapes are glue backed tape used for page setters, as in sticky notes.

The bottom left of the right page has a stamping of leaves, then embossed with brass powder.

Art Journal Gypsies Cover

This is the cover I made for my AJG Journal. It started with some molding paste, then colored with inks and acrylics. When dry I splotched on some Glass Bead gel from Golden products. I colored some places with alcohol inks. The plaque is made from air-dry clay, rolled thin and pressed over a carved jewelry box of mine, to get the bird image, then painted with H2O's. The oval glass over its face is also covered with glass bead gel. The flourish is Tim Holtz grungeboard. Oh yes! - this cover was a lot of fun to play with!

Delight in the Journey

Here is a little file booklet I made from a diecut kit. They were various sized mini files - it is mostly stamping and coloring with Distress Inks...then some ephemera - stickers, rub-ons, flowers. I punched two holes in the spine, and stitched with waxed linen thread, adding some baubles. Stamps from Tim Holtz and Time to Stamp.

GPP Street Team Crusade #21

I went to previous Crusades, and am finding quite a few that I would like to try. Here is the "Irresistable - Wax rubbings" challenge...my version of it. I used the Anaglypta Wallpaper which is textured paintable wallpaper as my 'stencil' for rubbing. The papers are gorgeous, more than my pictures show. I used 8 different patterns on lightweight columnar pad, light fabric paints, and of course crayons. Easy peasy backgrounds. Give it a try.

Collage and Doodles

This is my attempt at doodling, my version of it! I decided to practise my doodling, which right now is quite non-existent in my spreads. Do you think I would pass the test if my life depended upon it? lol
I used up bits and pieces that were on my worktable, from either experimenting or torn pieces, vintage newspaper clippings, paper flowers - you name it, I grabbed it! The background is H2O's which explains the shiny parts (camera does not like shiny)!

GPP Street Team Crusade #44

This Crusade is called ‘In a Scrape’ and involves painting with old credit cards.

You squish a few colors onto your page, then spread with the CC. This is just plain ole fun! I started with opaque acrylics, then whittled down to translucent paints, some watercolors, sometimes gesso. Then when it was dry, I painted over stencils with the CC. I love using stencils and masks.

This is my first entry, but I will definitely visit the previous challenges and try them.

Were you a reader of pulp fiction? I bought a book from the library, and am using some images from it. So cool! However, nothing in that book was happy....lol !
The right side spread is a stamped image of an Asian lady, which had the same colour scheme, so they got together! The two other images, the man and the woman, are from the Grunge master, Tim Holtz.

3 Envelope booklet

Well, the summer has been absolutely fantastic! There has been some days devoted to artwork, but not as much as in the cooler weather, so here goes---->>>
This is a 3 envelope booklet I put together from online instructions. I don't recall where I found it, (it has a weird way of putting together) but this is what I came up with. Nothing fancy, but I did enjoy all the inking, stamping, glueing, etc!

The back page (left) is a plastic kitchen tile, a rose image covered with glass bead gel. Hard to see in the scan but it is so pretty. The front top right has a UTEE piece that I stamped on.

I love using stencils, made from just about anything.

RUNABOUT BAG

A few days ago I had the urge to sew a small purse - When I need to do a quick bit of shopping I don't like to take a huge purse/bag filled with...``````~~~~~~ So I picked out three ties, and went to the design table. This is what I came up with.
The strap is webbing that I colored with alcohol inks in the same colors as the bag, but it did not photograph very well.
Bag size is 8"x6"x1.5"

This is my Sunday play time. I made this little canvas after watching a video on Splitcoast Stampers.
I used one of the flowers in the previous post.
I will be framing this lil canvas...I just had to post it! It was such fun to make.

FLOWERS

I was playing today and made a few flowers using different techniques.

The first flower is made from various sizes of paper purchased flowers. I put a brad in the centre, crumpled the flower petals, opened them up, and sprayed with mists.

Second flower is made with canvas cloth. It is not as easy to make, but I do love the look of it.

The third flower is make with a soft kraft paper - I cut out 10 circles with a decorative scissors, all the same shape. Did the same crumpling etc as with the first flower. It is more vibrant IRL. I really enjoyed making these little gems, and will be using them as accents.

The pages have a variety of napkins, the area around the man's image has textured paints, beeswax and water-soluble crayons. The bricks are made by drawing rectangles on kraft paper, using distress inks, crumpling up, and spritzing with water.

The left page is stencil work done with Golden's molding paste and sequin waste, then colored with dye inks. The scroll stencil is done with embossing ink and powders. Blue stamped image is harlequin and text.

A journal page - the mauve and blue section is H2O's painted on Tyvek. The slide is smooshed with Alcohol Inks. The bird is a stamped image from Stubby Stampers.

I really enjoyed creating this page, it came together rather easily.
The left page is simply layers of acrylic paints; the right background is, once again, painted used dryer sheets.
These sheets come in many varieties, giving lots of variations for altering.
Over the word Natural is a piece of wall repair tape. It is sticky back and the color can be changed simply by smooshing with a stamp pad. Gauze ribbon covers 'Balance'.

Experience Explosive Fun

This spread is another attempt at playing with layers. On the right side you can see the newspaper transfer using light colored acrylic paint. All of the ‘stamps’ are embossed wallpaper used as stamps, using a variety of inks and paints. The lady image is in a metal frame and covered with Diamond Glaze.

This background is made by ironing crumpled wax paper over the pages, and then smooshing the page with three colours of Distress Inks. I still love this technique!
The vine is stencilled using Distress Ink in Chipped Sapphire.
All diecuts and the image outlined with markers.

Here is a card I made to send a wee note off to a friend.
The background uses the shaving cream technique, and the stamped image was colored with permanent markers - on a piece of transparency.

This is me playing with backgrounds and newspaper transfers (the man on the left page) again! The foil on the right side is from a cottage cheese container, which I dry embossed then brushed with inks.

This tag features Stubby Stamps and Distress Inks.

The image is embossed with brass powder. The oval is embossed grungeboard.

The left page is covered with an ink-dyed fabric softener sheet. One image is attached, paper flowers, and several rubons, which I Love. Ribbons finish the page. The right page is background of Distress Inks, Rubons, an image, bird stamp from Stubby Stampers, more ribbons.

This is a page that features Stubby Stamps.
Stamp Cat with black Versafine Ink - what a fabulous stamp that is.

Below that, stamp the Criss-cross stamp. Glue some dyed lace at the bottom of that. Stamp the Arch Border onto twill ribbon...glue that down as shown.
Color twill with stamp pad, I used Distress Ink in Victorian Velvet.
Glue a strip of scrapbooking paper border to left of page, and Voila – finished. Easy Peasy!

These are a few pages I recently finished. The first one has a napkin/serviette background with images, paints and two stamped tags. The boardbook has the shape of a sheep. The next two pages are entries I made in a cookbook I purchased that was written in a language that Ididn't recognize, but the pages were perfect for altering...the book opens nice and flat.

This is simply collage, paints, images, oil pastels, lizards are stencils.

I made this tissue roll booklet for my sister's birthday, filling the envie-like pages with tags and pics of her grandkids. Here is a sampling of the pages.

UHU GLUE PROJECT - FEBRUARY 2010

This is the February UHU glue project - A sweet star-shaped box to fill with more candy for St.Patrick's Day.
I began by glueing the green paper along the side of the box, then spraying green and gold mica paints on the cover. I then painted the box top with crackle paint and when dry, added a bit more sparkle with clear glitter paint. I then took one of the foam clover leaf cutouts and stamped the sides of the box with black and gold paints. Boy, it sure is difficult to get a good pic of this box!! arghhh.
I glued three various shapes of the foam leaves plus the cute as ever ladybug piece, all together with the UHU Gluestick, then glued that to the top with the twist and glue. I am amazed at how well the foam pieces stuck together with the UHU gluestick.
Another fun project!

Valentines LOVE

This is another page in my Calendar Journal, Valentines LOVE. The loving couple is printed on Extravorganza. I love the soft effect of the fabric.The background is done with Portfolio Pastels...love 'em!
The right edge is a crotchet trim with sequins.

UHU GLUE VALENTINE BOX AND TAG

Here is another project using UHU Glue, this time the glue roller, which has micro dots, and is lovely to use as there is no gumming up ever, and is smooth flowing. I do like it a lot.
I used the pretty paper for the box, and lined the upper part of it as you can see in the photo. This will be filled with candy hearts, the little ones that I remember from oh so long ago!!
The tag was made from the three pieces of papers, stamping and embossing and then glueing with the roller...so smooth. I added the pretty gemstones to the hearts for a bit of bling.
